All of us who lose our health and strength regret the same things: not having been thankful enough for a fit body when we had one; having taken wellness, strength, fitness and health for granted; and having moaned and quibbled about our imperfections.

It is important to embrace your shape and enjoy its benefits, while understanding what you can - or should - change or adapt, and how to do so in a manner designed for long-term success and health. The remainder of this article discusses how to lose belly fat fast and more importantly, how you can go about doing exactly that.

We all cheat a bit, some of the time - pulling the tummy in, wearing make-up, dying our hair, wearing black. Torture underwear, however (you know, those garments that strap you in from above the knee to below the bust, take an age to put on and are meant to make you feel better about yourself but, actually, highlight the fact that you are desperate) is, to me, one cheat too far. It is akin to cosmetic surgery - simply, not being kind to yourself.

What you really need to achieve is a body you can feel comfortable and healthy in, and whether you get that just by changing it until you are comfortable, or by adjusting the way you feel about it, if the changes aren't actually necessary for your health and wellbeing, that's fine. The points below (some of which have been covered earlier in the chapter in more detail) should help you to decide what you can change, how you might change and whether change is even necessary or desirable. Acknowledging them is one of the keys to body IQ, and they may be the most important body facts you'll read:

Four things you need to know about your body... and why they are important

The basic shape you are as a young adult is the basic shape you will be for most of your life.

You can alter the 'cladding' on your body (e.g. you can get a bust enlargement, liposuction to get a smaller waist or lose or gain fat, or, to some extent, muscle).

But if you have wide hips and a narrow waist and back, you will always be pear-shaped. Your basic shape is based on bone structure and hardly alters until you are much older when shape changes are noticeable due to reduced bone mass and fluid depletion.

Conclusion: Be aware of your shape (as I said earlier it is important if you are apple-shaped to be wary of developing fat around your middle), but accept what's achievable and what isn't, and be realistic about which parts of your body you can change through diet and exercise.
